FREEMAN FAMILY ALL ABUSE SURVIVORORS
The Freeman’s have all been bullied/abused in some form, even their dogs. Lisa Freeman, founder of Abuse Bites & the Healing Projects Specialist for the Bully Police USA, is a lifelong abuse survivor. She was both bullied and the bully in school. At 13, she ran away with her older boyfriend who promised to love and protect her, but she was even more abused as they hitchhiked across the country for two years. Continuing to make bad choices and unable to break the abuse cycle, Lisa entered into two critically abusive marriages, one at 16 and then again at 18. Thankfully she escaped with her life and that of her children. Her book “Run For Your Life” is based on her true life story to help teens and adults make better choices and run to life not the things she did.
At the age of 26, Lisa began breaking the cycle of abuse from her life, and making better choices. Although still suffering terrible panic attacks and agoraphobia, she pressed on and got her GED, went onto college, where she maintained a 4.0 and made the Dean’s List, later achieving a Degree in Christian Ministry from Vision International. After five years of rejection letters, she was published in more than thirty magazines and became an Award-Winning Christian Author. Over the years she’s worked with children, teens/youth, and women. Today she’s happily married (18+ years) an Ordained Minister, Healing Evangelist, and an Award-Winning Certified Pet Therapist and Dog Trainer. Her message is clear, “It doesn’t matter so much what you did yesterday, what matters most is what you do today! If you want to see change it begins with you.”
All the Freeman’s have a story to share. John was overweight and bullied all his life, now he helps others who struggle with their weight. Robert was a cutter and suffered two nervous breakdowns, now he works for Mental Health and helps others with disabilities. Jeremiah was nearly bullied to death in high school and tried to commit suicide three times, now he writes and sings songs to encourage others. Melissa was learning impaired growing up, didn’t have many friends, was labeled “gay” and choked in high school. She pressed on and later graduated with honors and more friends than she could dream of and now mentors others and works as a Greeter at Walmart.
Brian had Asperger’s Syndrome and a rare heart condition. He was bullied all his life due to scarring and being different. But he had a special love and a forgiveness for even those who bullied him. He wanted to travel all over to help others. Sadly Brian passed away last year while waiting for a heart transplant. After he passed away, his family found a change jar he’d been saving, it was then that they knew they were supposed to collect CHANGE so they could travel all over like he wanted and CHANGE HEARTS and SAVE LIVES in his memory. “Change of Heart for Brian”.
The Freeman’s have traveled all over Michigan sharing their miraculous stories of healing, hope and survival to help others (victims, bystanders, bullies and their families). They’ve been featured on TCT Alive, Focus on the Family, and many other local, regional and international news outlets. They also have helped raise awareness and funds for needy and abused people and pets through various parades and events.
*Abuse Bites Presentations are catered to each individual audience and typically last an hour. We play fun, interactive games to teach safety, prevention, and awareness methods, our dogs do tricks, Jeremiah sings, and then we offer a time of pet therapy (if there’s time). We strongly encourage schools to do large assemblies and if possible have a parent night as well, so that everyone hears the same message. We’re also available to do a special session on “Healing From Abuse” for anyone (victim, bully, bystander, family member) who needs healing in this area.
Currently the Freeman’s reside in Owosso, Michigan and are hosting a Blog Talk Radio Show “Bullying Matters” for Dreamcatchers for Abused Children, to offer help and healing for victims, bystanders and bullies.
